Les exploitations laitières du nord de l’UE : divergence des modèles

Abstract : This paper presents an analysis of the structural and economic situation of dairy farms in several regions/countries of the European Union. It seeks to point out the diverse patterns of production and to assess their strengths and weaknesses. For that, we use the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and surveys of experts and farmers. Penalized by its lower labor productivity, French holdings are advantaged by reasonable costs for the production factors (land and quota) and the food systems. If they are penalized by the high cost of mechanization and sustained investment, they could become more efficient in the medium term thanks to productivity gains and progressive repayment of loans.
