Modelisation des transferts gazeux dans le lit de semences : application au diagnostic des conditions d'hypoxie des semences de betterave sucriere (Beta vulgaris L.) pendant la germination. II. Resultats des simulations

Abstract : A model of gas transfer in cultivated soil layers, intended for the study of hypoxia conditions for sugar beet seeds, was presented in an earlier paper (RICHARD & GUERIF 1988). This model was applied to a profile with or without surface crusting and for different characteristics of the crust. Neglecting the case where the seed bed is quasi-saturated, it appeared that the oxygen concentration became limiting in the seed bed only if a crust formed at the surface and for high microbial respiration. Soil microbial respiration, greatly depends on temperature and oxygen concentration may be limiting only during short periods in the day ; the consequences on the germination are not known. The role of the structural and water potential characteristics of the profile are discussed either for a saturated, unsaturated or cracked crust.
