Incidences environnementales de stratégies d’alimentation innovantes en élevages porcins

Abstract : Feeding strategies can be used to reduce environmental impacts of pig production by (1) using a multiobjective function (MO) to formulate feeds based on the price and environmental impacts of feedstuffs and/or (2) adapting the feed to changes in animal requirements during the fattening phase. This study analyses combination of the two options and their environmental consequences. Five feeding strategies were specified for the fattening period: two-phase feeding (BP); two-phase feeding with a reduction in dietary energy content (BPeg) or amino acid content (BPaa); and a multiphase feeding strategy managed either at the pen level (MPg) or by individual feeding (MPi). For each strategy, feeds were formulated with both a least cost formulation (LC) and with a MO formulation. Environmental impacts per kg of pig live weight at the farm gate were assessed with Life Cycle Analysis and compared to those of a baseline scenario (BP-LC). With MO, all strategies reduced environmental impacts per kg of pig up to 10%, except the BPeg strategy for acidification and climate change impacts. Three main factors explained the results among impacts and strategies: (1) relative contribution of feed to LCA impacts of pigs (34-98%); (2) feed conversion ratio, which indicates the overall efficiency of the system and drives nitrogen excretion and gas emissions; and (3) the nutritional composition of feed (protein content), which explains nitrogen excretion. This study highlights the need to optimize the feeding strategy globally by considering feed impacts, animal performance and manure management.
