Innovations biotechniques de la production de porcs en milieu tropical

Abstract : The pig industry in the French West Indies (FWI) is facing several challenges including the increase in its contribution to the local meat consumption. Pig production in FWI is limited by specific local constraints such as insularity and the distance from the European Union and constraints common to other tropical regions such as climatic factors, availability of food resources, etc... Increase in livestock productivity and control of production costs are key factors for the development of local pig production. Results from INRA and its partners are a source of innovations to contribute to the sustainable development of pig production in the tropics and especially in FWI. Solutions have been developed to reduce feed costs, production of manure and to limit the effects of climatic environment mainly through dietary and genetic strategies.
