Transforming the vineyard: voices from the vines (draft)

Résumé

In Europe the dark side of productionist practices has been dramatically exposedin recent times and consumer concerns have in consequence become increasingly vocal, emerging as a key actor in rural policy. Wine producers of "la Cote d'Or" in Burgundy, France, percieve in differentsways the consumer concerns related to their practices. If one thing is certain, hitherto "normal" grape-growing and wine making practices are being increasingly examined by critical eyes, and all is not rosy. From a growing consumer interest in the production practices of those who produce what they consume, to more ostentatious European legislation on chemical use, through local and regional concerns over environmental pollution, all is changing trade environment, grape-growers and winmakers are faced with a complex and changing situation. The connotation of progress associated with the chemical revolution has dissolved, and while the residues of progress are still with us, adaptation is the new catch-cry. Our poaper draws on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in la Cote d'Or and is composed of two parts. In the first instance, we describe the evolving context for winemakers and grape-growers along la Cote d'or, focusing particularly on the problem of environmental polluants trhough the chain of interested parties. We look at the external world that is the constant backdrop of the family, individual or enterprise engaged in wine production. The secons section deals with the density and complexity of micro-local relationships. Our contention is that the processes of control are not simply impositional. And thus it is a human landscape, with its contours and fault lines, witch details how processes are constitued in a subjective world not necessarly fully articulated with the structures of power.
