Limitation du transfert par ruissellement vers les eaux superficielles de deux herbicides (isoproturon et diflufénicanil). Méthodologie analytique et étude de l'efficacité de bandes enherbées

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of experimental grassed buffer strips in reducing the transfer of two herbicides in runoff: isoproturon (IPU) and diflufenican (DFF), which have different physico-chemical properties. The experimental site, implemented at the La Jaillière I.T.C.F. research farm, has been studied during four cropping periods under natural rainfalls, and in conditions of two simulated rainfalls generating more important runoff. First of all, specific analytical methods have been developped to determine IPU and DFF concentrations in each type of sample (runoff, soil and runoff liquid and solid phases), and to pick out the main features of their transfer in runoff. Analytical results were also used to evaluate the effectiveness of grassed buffer strips. Results obtained in other experimental sites implemented at the Bignan, Plélo and La Jaillière research farms, with lindane, atrazine and two metabolites, have confirmed the conclusions drawn at La Jaillière with IPU and DFF. It appears that under the experimental conditions, the pesticide losses in runoff represented less than 1 % of applied amounts; the first runoff events which occured after application being responsible for the major losses. Grassed buffer strips study shows that several processes are involved in the restriction of pesticide transfer: infiltration of water and soluble pesticides (IPU, atrazine) within the strip, retention of sediment-bound pesticides (DFF, lindane) due to filtration and sedimentation, and retention of soluble pesticides by sorption onto organic matter and vegetation in the strip surface area. The experimental strips are effective, in particular, in reducing pesticide concentration in runoff. Furthermore, soil analysis results show that IPU and DFF residues do not accumulate in the strips.
