Modélisation numérique des impacts de recharges sédimentaires en rivière aménagée. Cas du Vieux-Rhin entre Kembs et Breisach

Abstract : This PhD work aims at assessing the impact of sediment feeding measures on the morphodynamics of the Old Rhine reach, located between Kembs and Breisach dams by numerical modelling. As part of the InterReg project for the redynamisation of the Old Rhine, such simulations are essential to estimate the efficiency of redynamisation scenarii as well as associated risks, such as deposit fixation or destabilisation of the paved bed. On the whole Old Rhine reach (50 km), 1D numerical simulations for the years 1950, 1990 and 2009 evaluated the fluvial dynamics taking into account the effect of vegetation. Sedimentary processes occurring during sediment feeding were simulated with the 1D numerical model RubarBE. In these modellings, grain size downstream fining, morphological evolutions and capture of the finer grains were reproduced. Two-dimensional simulations of injection sites were performed with Rubar20TS numerical model. The morphological evolutions of injected sediment were simulated and sites propitious to sediment deposition were identified. Conclusions were drawn from simulations of both sediment bar feeding and redynamisation scenarii: a bar with steep slopes induces an easier sediment mobilisation; the choice of the site and bar width seems to be important in order to create enough dynamics close to the gravel bar; the injection of a gravel bar appears to be more efficient than lateral erosion. An optimal sediment feeding scenario could be injections of 20000 m³ gravel bars, repeated in time and/or space.
