Modifications des caractéristiques d'un sillage par une couche de mélange plane

Abstract : We try to understand the three dimensional dynamics of the flow past a cylinder embedded in a plane mixing layer. Investigation has been carried out involving miniature four hot wire probe which allows to measure simultaneously the instantaneous three velocity components. The Reynolds number was in the range 6000-9000 In a first part, we analyze mean velocity characteristics. This enable us to consider the flow as a wake perturbed by a plane mixing layer. Indeed, several modifications of the characteristics of the wake can be observed. Especially in the near wake, where the length of the eddy formation region, the base pressure coefficient and the Strouhal number have an unusual behaviour. It also appears a significant reduction in the drag, in the high-velocity side of the mixing layer. This particular aspect is linked with a secondary flow from the low- to the high velocity side of the mixing layer. These modifications are linked with a complex spectral behavior. Indeed, the wake is divided in two cells, each with a distinct, constant, shedding frequency : one in the low-velocity side of the mixing layer, the other in high-velocity side where a vortex reconnection with the major vorticity of the mixing layer takes place. Reynolds stress re-organization also show such a behaviour.
