Water bodies and fish management in France

Abstract : 3000 lakes, ponds and reservoirs over 1 ha were registered in France. Commercial fishing is very restricted but there is a great economic potential for recreational fishing. Since 1990, important measures have been taken to manage fish and fishing ressources in streams. Nevertheless, fish management in lakes is still empirical. To define a general fish management strategy, a survey on local management methods was carried out in 1998. The aim was to identify the management actions undertaken and specific problems encountered during the management of lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Results were presented and discussed.
