The Gironde estuary: a European reference for fish population?

Abstract : Estuaries are very productive ecosystems which in some cases have been adversely impacted by human activities. Thus, it is important to monitor fish assemblages in these systems to evaluate the impact of such activities on them. This paper aims to provide general and basic knowledge about characteristics and features of estuaries through the case of the Gironde estuary. It provides also a brief overview of how to assess the quality of fish assemblage, how to define reference conditions and how to compare with other estuaries. Finally, this paper points out some questions and difficulties in implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) for estuaries.
