Application du nouveau test respirométrique BIODEC à différents mélanges de déchets organiques à composter

Abstract : In order to qualify the operation of its composting plants and to face a growing market, a pre-stage of waste characterization through a new respirometric test called BIODEC has been developed and patented by Suez Environnement in association with Cemagref. The first application of this test has been operated in 2005 in the Research and Technical Center (CIRSEE) of Suez Environnement through the building and the technical validation of a 4 cells respirometric device that has been used on several sludge and organic waste feedstock already treated in Suez Environnement composting plants. The experimental respirometric curve analysis of each industrial mixture and its modelling supply the compostability index, the duration of the test and the AT4 equivalent; .the results obtained on 5 sludges of different origins and mixed with shredded wood pallets show a systematic and important peak of consumption occurring during the beginning of the biological reaction but different levels of oxygen consumption and significant variations (10 to 32%) of the compostability index. Concerning the two first samples of mechanically pre-treated refuse, results show similar levels of oxygen consumption but without marked peaks and with a bad reproducibility linked to the variation of composition met from a sample to another. It seems already obvious that the BIODEC test is reliable and able to characterize the potential of biodegradation of organic waste mixtures. It allows to differentiate and compare the potential and dynamics of degradation of the different analysed mixtures and to make the appropriate choices for an optimal initial mixture.
