Mesure de la biodégradabilité des déchets et des composts par respirométrie. Applications opérationnelles

Abstract : The development of tools to determine accurately the organic wastes biodegradability, before, during and after their composting treatment, is a major challenge in order to - define the initial compostability of organic wastes and the composting process parameters for their treatment, - follow and optimise the composting process on the organic matter biostabilisation point of view, - provide biostabilisation indicators for composts. A dynamic respirometric method, using several liters of non-pretreated solid material in controlled conditions of aeration, temperature and moisture, was applied in order to characterise and compare the biodegradability of 9 organic wastes (sludge, green wastes, grape cake, pretreated municipal wastes, solid fraction from slurry centrifugation). Biodegradability was compared on one hand relating to the total amount of biodegradable organic matter within the studied wastes, and on the other hand relating to the biodegradation kinetics. In the purpose of an operational use, the respirometric results were also interpreted in order to define the best composting process conditions. For 3 of the 9 previous wastes, the residual biodegradability during and/or at the end of their composting treatment was also determined. The comparison between the residual biodegradability variation during composting and the biodegradation kinetics obtained by the respirometric characterisation of waste before its treatment, allowed the identification of composting process defaults and then its optimisation. The determination of biological stability of composts thanks to this respirometric method should be further investigated, in particular to determine absolute values validated for all products and function of their agronomic uses.
