Conséquences de la canicule et de la sécheresse 2003 sur les pins méditerranéens

Abstract : In 2003, scorching heat and drought struck the Mediterranean region, affecting the whole vegetation. During this year, conifers lost a strong proportion of their leaves. The very dry springs which followed one after the other from 2004 till 2007 did not allow these trees to recover. Extensive Pinus sylvestris dieback was observed, in the coastal mountains as well as in the hinterland. Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinaster better resisted and for these species, only trees previously weakened by accidents or parasites succumbed. The health status of the majority of the Mediterranean pines remains worrying at the middle 2007: the growth in diameter and the growth of twigs, as well as the number and the size of leaves are still lower than normal. The series of years 2003-2007 could be a good anticipation of the future climate, and lets suspect major turnovers in the functioning and the composition of forest ecosystems.
