A discrete numerical analysis of bifurcation and limit state in granular media

Une analyse discrète de la bifurcation et de l'état limite dans les milieux granulaires

Résumé

From direct simulations with a discrete element model, the existence of mixed limit states strictly included in the plastic limit condition is verified. We show numerically that these limit states are equivalently continuous bifurcation states, since a slight perturbation allows to lead the sample from an equilibrium state to a sudden diffuse failure (depending on the control parameters chosen). The continuous bifurcation states can be detected with the second-order work criterion.
