We here wish to discuss the frequent position or practice that ecological engineering ought to much better incorporate ecological theories and concepts to improve. We highlight that very different sensible positions are found in the literature, that vary between more theory, more methods or more natural history. This might partly depend on the ecological level being managed (ecosystems, communities, populations). And what if ecological engineering helped define the (applied) foundations of theoretical ecology?
