Participatory design of a tool to evaluate the sustainability of tropical farming systems: the case of French Reunion Island

Abstract : This paper presents an approach which aimed at co-designing a dual-purpose tool which both enables to assess farm sustainability and identify the improvement objectives. We postulated that practices have to be assessed at the farm scale at which the technical decisions are made. The concept of sustainable agriculture, at the heart of this approach was to be locally defined involving stakeholders from all agricultural sectors so that this tool is efficient.
