Analyse de la diversité de l’élevage dans les territoires : application en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Abstract : In spite of a general trend towards specialization in the farming sector during the last 50 years, there are still mixed livestock farming systems and territories. Interest for diversity has recently risen as it offers opportunity to cope with climatic hazard and market fluctuation. In France, the political agenda (i.e., the agroecological transition) also puts the emphasis on diversified agricultural systems, but technical references are lacking. In the Auvergne-Rhône- Alpes region, 39% from the 28 291 farms allowing ruminant production are diversified: beef and dairy cattle, mixed cattle-sheep, crop and livestock. Some farms present also some forms of products diversification beyond the dominant products such as weanlings, milk and lambs. Our methodological approach allows analyzing and mapping these various forms of livestock diversification in territories, which is needed for assessing the opportunities and limits provided by diversity for sustainable livestock development.
