The forest fire issue in SE France
Le problème des incendies de forêt dans le sud est de la France
Résumé
To live at the closest of the Mediterranean forest to enjoy the benefits of Nature: an idea that reaches more and more city-dwellers... but it comes with its own set of risks. In south-eastern France, almost half of the total fire ignitions occurs in the areas where housing intermingles with wildland. In these areas, called wildland-urban interfaces, the fire risk is high, especially in summer because of the weather conditions conducive to fire and of the higher population density, most fires being human-caused. Moreover, the flammable vegetation surrounding housing makes the situation worse, forming a fuel continuity that allows the fire propagation from the forest to housing. With the on-going global change, the forest fire issue needs to be tackled with a higher efficiency than ever in order to strongly mitigate the occurrence of destructive fire events in these areas.
