AQUADATASET Project Proposal (6th WFP / STREPS) - Cemagref contribution : Relationships between chemical and ecological status (benthic diatoms - aquatic macrophytes)

Abstract : The Water Framework Directive (WFD - 2000/60/EC) sets the objective to prevent deterioration in status of all Community waters (i.e. both surface- and ground-waters, including coastal waters, throughout the EU) and to ensure the achievement and maintenance of their good status by 2015. The main purpose of the research program proposed in AQUADATASET is then to establish relationships between the chemical and ecological status of surface waters, in order : 1) to link the deterioration of the ecological status to well identified chemical disturbances, and 2) to make the water ecosystem diagnosis more accurate and interpretable for people who assess its status, for managers and for policy-makers. This needs to settle up knowledge, methodologies, modelling and dedicated tools permitting to make the part between : 1) chemical and biological usual natural variation into the hydrosystem (identification and knowledge about the good reference sites), the effect of others abiotic disturbances (mostly physical ones) impacting the ecosystem functioning (excluding chemical anthropogenic disturbances) and 3) man-made chemical effects interpreted as disturbances through the biological biocenosis response and altering the hydrosystem ecological status. Cemagref will participate in the project on benthic diatoms and aquatic macrophytes BQEs, including 1) work on French and, if possible, other national datasets (updating of taxonomic aspects, stongly evolutive), 2) proceeding new surveys on targeted situations, either reference or presenting a strong and characteristic chemical gradient, 3) an implication in data analysis (classification, scheduling), 4) making neuronal modelling (unsupervised and supervised), and 5) a rather strong implication in the production of a toolbox and a system of decision support integrating knowledge acquired from the rest of the project (WP 6, under responsibility of UPS- CNRS Toulouse.
