Integrated control practices: combining complementary methods to combat water vole outbreaks with a view to maintaining foraging system self-sufficiency

Le concept de lutte raisonnée : combiner des méthodes collectives contre le campagnol terrestre afin de conserver une autonomie fourragère

Résumé

Research aimed at controlling vole outbreaks has led to the development of different integrated control measures. The goal is to act as early as possible to limit the growth of water vole populations using a holistic approach that involves managing both farmlands and ecosystems with the intention of preserving the self-sufficiency of foraging systems while simultaneously minimising undesirable environmental impacts (such as may occur when pesticides are used). Several complementary control measures can be employed in tandem (such as modifying the crop management sequence) to decrease habitat favorability for the vole (or the mole, a species that makes it easier for voles to colonise fields) and to increase the presence of predators. To this end, farmers have been offered the chance to establish formal partnerships with government-recognised health-focused organisations in the region.
