The rooibos from South Africa: how biodiversity invites itself in the design of a geographical indication
Le rooibos d'Afrique du Sud : comment la biodiversité s'invite dans la construction d'une indication géographique

This article gives a particular insight into the relationships between geographical indications (GI) and biodiversity conservation through the analysis of the rooibos case, an herbal tea produced in South Africa that progressively became a “terroir ” product. The end of the apartheid and the privatisation of the supply chain in the 1990s opened new prospects for this production to evolve in reaction to a growing market demand in particular. Recently the rooibos industry engaged in a GI initiative. The emergence in parallel of a scheme to protect biodiversity favoured the integration of this question into the building of the GI. We show that biodiversity then appeared in the GI scheme as a catalyser for reflecting on practices. Through the debates that it triggers, biodiversity appears as a mediator and a support for new forms of qualification of practices and of spaces of production.
Cet article apporte un éclairage particulier sur les relations entre indications géographiques et conservation de la biodiversité à travers l’analyse du cas du rooibos, tisane produite en Afrique du Sud, qui s’est peu à peu construit comme un produit de terroir. La fin de l’apartheid et la privatisation de la filière dans les années 1990 ont ouvert de nouvelles perspectives pour faire évoluer cette production en réponse à une demande croissante des marchés notamment. Récemment, une démarche de construction d’IG a été engagée sur le rooibos. L’émergence en parallèle d’un dispositif visant à la conservation de la biodiversité a favorisé l’intégration de celle-ci dans la construction de l’IG. Nous montrons comment la biodiversité s’est alors avérée dans le dispositif de l’IG un catalyseur de réflexion autour des pratiques. À travers les débats qu’elle suscite, la biodiversité apparaît comme un médiateur et un support de nouvelles formes de qualification des pratiques et des espaces de production.
