Physical and mechanical wood properties of different larch origins and species across western Europe

Abstract : Wood properties of 11 woodlots grown in lowland are analysed and compared to 2 woodlots from old-grown native stands in the Alps (A, F). Lowland origins include 3 pecies (European, Japanese and hybrid larch) and European larch lots are represented by several origins from both the Alps but also from Central Europe (Sudetan Mts and Central Poland). Lowland woodlots come from about 40-yr old stands located in Ardennes (B), Brittany (F), lower Saxony (D) and Wales (GB). Wood parameters include density at 12%, shrinkage and modulus of elasticity. In addition to laboratory analysis on clear-wood specimen, an industrial evaluation of MOE was conducted on large-size beams (10 x 15 x 400 cm) for 5 origins. Strong species, origins, position along the radius and site effects are observed for nearly all traits. Among lowland origins, Japanese larch appears superior for both density and stiffness together with a low shrinkage. Hybrid larch has the lowest shrinkage but compares to European larch origins for other traits. Among European larch origins, Sudetan ones appear on average best for density and stiffness but not for shrinkage ; alpine ones show intermediate to low properties. A sharp decrease of parameters for density and MOE is observed for alpine origins grown in lowland compared to the same from the Alps. More comparable results are found for shrinkage. Some lowland origins are as good as native alpine origins or even better for shrinkage. The same ranking of origins for MOE is shown from laboratory and industrial tests.
