Caractérisation de la culture de bananes plantain en Guadeloupe : diversité des pratiques, performance écologique & référencement technico-économique

Abstract : The 2009 social movements in Guadeloupe are calling for a return to local production. To meet this demand, the government is launching the Réseaux de Tranfert et d’Innovation Agricole (RITA). Plantain has a particular importance in the diet of Guadeloupeans. But few studies have been conducted on this production on the scale of the archipelago. The only work devoted to it date from 2011. Since then, the situation has changed with the appearance of Black Sigatoka, a fungal disease particularly virulent for banana, and the overall context of the agro-ecological transition. Faces with these new constraints, INRA, CIRAD and other partners are launching the INTENSECOPLANTAIN project within the framework of RITA 2. INRA raises the question of the evolution of practices of plantain planters. This study is at the beginning of the project and proposes to characterize the diversity of plantain- producing farms in Guadeloupe by describing the variability of the techniques used, and their ecological and economic performance. We have shown that there is no incompatibility between ecological performance and economic performance. Guadeloupe farmers have developed strategies to adapt new constraints. Faced with falling prices, some have developed “yield” strategies when others to meet new environmental requirements have developed “price” strategies. This study proposes an original approach based on the agro-ecological zones defined in 2014. Homogeneous groups of farms have been defined according to the exploitation trajectories. The ecological performance of the practices has been calculated in order to define five types. These five types have served as a basis for technical and economic referencing which could be used by INRA for the establishment of experimental plots.
