Agroecology: which challenges for agriculture and research in the Caribbean?

Résumé

Conventional and agro industrial agriculture has reached its limits in fragile media like tropical islands where environmental and social constrains are among the highest in the world. New production modes have to be implemented to protect and rehab some polluted and degraded fields/agricultural areas. Agroecology could be a strategy to achieve ecological intensive agrosystems. In this paper we present some definitions of agroecology and its concepts applications in innovative cropping systems. Innovation is described through several steps and perspectives are given in the Caribbean in term of initiatives to spread knowledge, new cultural practices and production methods.
