This study aims to better understand representations of dimensions that can be used to characterize the trust relationship between pig farmers and their veterinarians. Thirty-three semi-structured interviews (19 farmers and 14 veterinarians) were conducted face-to-face, by videoconference or by telephone. During these interviews, we performed free-association tasks using questions such as “What is a caring farmer/veterinarian?” for each of four dimensions (competence, benevolence, integrity, and assertiveness). Once transcribed, interviews were collected in a corpus and analysed by descending hierarchical classification (DHC) to describe the different lexical worlds present. The DHC established four specific classes containing different words and expressions. Class 1 described the representation of competence with words such as “competent”, “technical” and “knowledge”. Class 2 included words such as “caring”, “kind” and “nice”, which indicated that benevolence refers to these descriptive traits and is built from politeness and extra-professional discussions. Class 3 indicated that a farmer/veterinarian will be perceived as determined if he/she gives the impression that he/she does everything to solve the problems of the farm (“determined”, “problem”, “trying”, “solution”). Class 4, with words such as “integrity”, “honest” and “respect”, emphasized that honesty and respect are values associated with integrity really important on farms. Analysing these classes allowed us to find the four dimensions tested, which shows that pig farmers and veterinarians have a precise and homogeneous representation of each dimension of trust. Better understanding the content of each dimension will help us to refine items for the “Trust in Veterinarian Scale” we developed and to adapt it to the ways that pig farmers and veterinarians speak and think.
