Fonctionnement biogéochimique d'écosystèmes forestiers de production

Résumé

The size of the human population is increasing at an exponential rate. Consequently, the demand for energy and raw materials is also increasing steeply. This is the case for woody products which are more and more harvested in forests (www.fao.org). Planted forests represent only 5% of the total surface area of forests but produce 33% of the yearly production and this latter proportion is still rising. The high contribution of planted forests to the global wood production is mainly due to their intensive management. The sustainability of such an intensive management is questionable because these ecosystems are often growing on poor soils. My research activity was related to this topic as my objective was to study, quantify and model the fluxes of nutrients in planted forests. The present report shows that the decisions taken by the forest manager (like the choice of the tree species, the application of fertilizers or wood ash, the understory control or the rate of biomass harvests) greatly modify the biogeochemical functioning and the input-output budget of the ecosystem. My research project will focus on modelling of nutrient fluxes in planted forests. The models to be built or used will be process based models. An integrated modelling of the biogeochemical functioning of a complex ecosystem like a forest requires a lot of work and skills. Therefore, my research project will be clearly a collaboration project with the other members of the Forest Ecosystems team of the UMR TCEM and with some other units which are sharing the same modelling approach.
