Upscaling bio-economic model: economic and environmental assessment of introducing legume and protein rich crops in farming systems of Western France

Abstract : In Western France, high amounts of imported protein is used to feeding animals. The development of legume and protein-rich (LPR) crops may be an option to compensate the lack of protein autonomy. A bio-economic model is proposed to assess the environmental and economic impacts of LPR crop implementation at regional scale. The main added-values of this model are: (1) a modelling chain upscaling the results from farm to territory level, (2) different technical coefficients taking into account farm diversity and bio-physical heterogeneity and (3) a regional partial equilibrium model describing the possible compensations of protein autonomy between farms.
