Determination of particle concentration in a slurry system by an ultrasonic technique

Détermination de la concentration en particule dans un coulis par méthode ultrasonore

Résumé

Ice slurry is slowly developing and the enhancement of its efficiency depends on an accurate control of the ice content. The aim of this work is to develop an ultrasonic sensor capable to measure precisely the ice fraction content of ice slurry. For this end we first measure the sound velocity in model suspensions of PMMA beads (for different concentrations) mixed with polyethylene glycol (PEG 300). The experiments are compared with the predictions by the effective medium model. We next measure the sound velocity in polypropylene glycol slurry whose concentration changes with temperature. These results show a bijective relationship between the solid content and the sound velocity, promising for an ultrasonic sensor development.
