La diversité des exploitations et des territoires laitiers français face à la fin des quotas

Abstract : The transformation of the French dairy sector is part of political, economic and sociological evolutions. The end of milk quotas occurs with dynamic and often favorable markets for dairy products (but with highly volatile prices) which enabled France to develop its dairy exports and generate large trade surpluses. The transition from a quota administered system to private agreements through formal contracts between producers and processors occurs gradually releasing the territorial stability of milk production. The rapid reduction of French dairy farms number is partially related to the aging of farm managers but also with stiff competition with crop production in some areas since 2007. Producers' response to market signals has allowed the most dynamic milk fields in plain areas to recover their highest level of milk production reached in the early 80s but further developments could be hampered by excessive milk price volatility.
