Élevages laitiers, territoires de l’Ouest de la France et prairies

Abstract : Milk producers in western France, like those of other regions have experienced a particularly difficult economic situation in 2009. The increase in production costs, the dynamics of sustained investment and low milk prices have combined in the sense of a significant reduction in their income. The removal of quotas by 2015 raises debate on the geographical location of dairy farming, the rate of farm restructuring or conditions of implementation of new relationships (contracts) between producers and dairy companies. Similarly, the increasing openness of international markets and the changing rules for public intervention promotes higher price volatility. In a context where the intra-community competition is important (especially with Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark), this paper recalls the main strengths and weaknesses of the dairy sector in western France.
