Genome Bioinformatics at GDEC

Abstract

Presentation is an overview of the projects developed at GDEC Institute on wheat genomics and bioinformatics. Bread wheat is one of the most important crops and improving our knowledge about its genome and the diversity of cultivated varieties and wild relatives is needed to face the challenge of a more sustainable agriculture. Our bioinformatics research activities concern wheat genome sequencing, gene and transposon annotation, and analysis of structural variations. The particularity of wheat genomics is the complexity of its genome which is 15 Gb, hexaploid, and shaped by millions of copies of transposons. We develop strategies and methodologies dedicated to tackle the complexity of this genome in order to get a clear view of its composition, a better understanding of transposon dynamics, and the impact of polyploidy. Wheat scientific community has now reached the pangenomics area, with multiple high-quality genome sequences available. An overview of our bioinformatic developments and recent results about wheat pangenomics will be presented.
