Plate-like settling
La décantation lamellaire
Résumé
Activated sludge represents a major aspect of the waste treatment plants in France and the efficiency of the secondary settling is necessary for its operation. Almost all these installations are of the static type and require large soil foundations. The interest of ever more compact installations caused a contractor to develop plate-like settling of activated sludge. Measurements of six small installations equipped with extended aeration type of stations have allowed us to improve our knowledge on the efficiency of these systems and to determine the maximum hydraulic load. Using the results, a curve showing the maximum superficial hydraulic load as a function of the corrected volume was established. It integrates the sludge sedimentation ability (sludge index) and its concentration. Thus, a comparison in terms of space gain with static sedimentation was made. The monitoring of different sites has allowed us to suggest a number of technical recommendations on the sizing and the operation of these installations.
