Modelling of air flow through screens in livestock buildings by simulations and scale model experiments

Abstract : This study has been led to develop the use of numerical simulations to model the air motion in a ventilated livestock building with a diffusing ceiling inlet. To validate the use of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) we built a simple scale-model. Several airflow simulations were carried out with the CFX software. Good predictions were obtained for ventilated rooms with an isotropic porous material in the location of the diffusing ceiling. In the case of a perforated diffusing ceiling, rather good predictions of the flow structure were obtained by individually simulating each hole of the plate but accuracy was insufficient. We tested also a crude modelling of this perforated plate by considering it as a virtual porous medium. Such simulations were not consistent and may be enhanced with a better determination of the anisotropic resistance in this medium.
