Aerobic biodegradation of polymers in solid state conditions: a review of environmental and physicochemical parameter settings in laboratory simulations

Over the last few years, biodegradable polymers have been developed to replace petrochemical polymers. Up to now, researches devoted to these polymers essentially focused onto their biodegradability. There is now a need to bear out their non-toxicity. To check this, the biodegradation must be carried out in accelerated laboratory tests which allow the metabolites and residues to be recovered. To be close to the natural conditions (compost, field), degradation must be run on solid-state substrates. This report is a review of studies of aerobic degradation in solid-state substrate. It focuses in particular on the environmental, physical and chemical parameters (substrate nature, moisture, temperature, C/N ratio, pH, _) which influence biodegradation kinetics. It also aims at finding the solid substrate most adapted to residues and metabolite recovery. The most significant parameters seem to be the substrate nature, the moisture content and the temperature. The inert substrates such as vermiculite are well fitted to residuals extraction. Finally, these review opens the field to new researches aiming at optimising the conditions of aerobic biodegradation in solid-state conditions, in order to recover the metabolites and residuals of this degradation.
