Incidental escapement of farmed siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii Brandt 1869 in last watershed of the endangered european sturgeon Acipenser sturio L. 1758
Abstract
In the night of 27-28 December 1999 a strong storm (wind speed > 150 km.h-1) occurred in the southwest of France, causing an exceptional water elevation in the Gironde estuary. This in turn caused the breaking of a dike on the right bank of the estuary and the resultant partial submersion of a Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii Brandt 1869) fishfarm located 2 km from the estuary where the salinity range is 5-150/00, in a wet grassland sector. This situation led to the escapement of approximately 27 tonnes (t) of Siberian sturgeon into the last watershed sheltering the endangered European sturgeon Acipenser sturio L.
