Interactions between aquatic vegetation and flow conditions in a large alluvial river

The Dordogne river basin is drained by eutrophic waters resulting from the intensive agricultural exploitation of its lands. It flows slowly during the low water season. A small bottom gradient exists in its alluvial flat land. The development of macrophytes may be observed from year to year in the river. This process may reduce the amount of nutrients in the water, which can impair the natural aquatic ecosystem and also limit other water services like boating or fishing. The dynamic process of growth and expansion seems to depend mainly on physical determinants, when nutrients are not a limiting factor. Therefore, can the physical determinants be managed in order to control macrophyte development? A multidisciplinary research program implemented in France attempted to quantify, on one hand, the impact of the history of flow conditions on the life cycle of macrophytes and, on the other, the impact of macrophytes on flow resistance.
