Impact du changement climatique sur la productivité et la santé de la forêt méditerranéenne

Abstract : The sensitivity of trees to monthly climatic parameters depends on the annual average temperature and the quality of sites, particularly because of the increasing time lag between the growing season, rain regime and the availability of the water reserve in the soil. Climate warming thus has significant effects on the forest productivity The productivity of Pinus silvestris strongly decreased during the 20th century. It should continue to fall in the next decades, because of the increase of the frequency and intensity of water stresses. The dieback observed in Pinus silvestris stands since 2003 shows that the future of this species is threatened in the short or middle term by the climate warming in the PACA region. On the contrary, the productivity of Pinus halepensis increased during all the 20th century. However, critical thresholds seem to have been passed since the end of the 90s. This productivity stagnated then suffered strongly from the scorching heat of 2003 and from the droughts which followed for 4 years. It should be able to maintain at a the same level during some decades before collapsing by the middle of the 21th century. In 2003, conifer lost a strong proportion of their leaves. The very dry springs from 2004 till 2007 did not allow these trees to recover. The health status of the majority of the Mediterranean pines remains worrying at the middle 2007: the growth in diameter and the growth of twigs, as well as the number and the size of leaves are far lower than normal. The series of years 2003-2007 could be a good anticipation of the future climate, and lets suspect major turnovers in the functioning and the composition of the forest ecosystems.
