Liquid concentration, droplet size and velocity measurements using an optical probe to characterize the hollow cone spray atomisation

The dense atomization region of a hollow cone nozzle has been studied in this paper. A new tool, an optic sensor, usually devoted to automotive and rocket engine sprays, has been tested by A2 Photonics Sensor, France, for the Cemagref. It has been demonstrated that the approach is feasible. The optical probe gave information about the Liquid Presence Rate, the Sauter Mean Diameter and the velocity magnitude. Several radial profiles have been measured from 1 mm to 10 mm from the nozzle exit. Measurements gave insight into the surfactant influence on the atomization phenomenon. Addition of LI700 and Heliosol increase the Sauter Mean Diameter of the droplets. Moreover, they increase also the size spectrum. The injection pressure influence is very lower than the liquid solution one.
