Terrestrial digital photogrammetry: application to avalanche characterization
Photogrammétrie numérique terrestre : application à la caractérisation des avalanches
Résumé
Preliminary developments on terrestrial photogrammetry have been carried out on Lautaret full-scale avalanche experimental site. Terrestrial photogrammetry is a very flexible method to obtain Digital Elevation Models (DEM) during an avalanche release. Moreover, terrestrial photogrammetry is the only method able to instantaneously produce DEMs during the avalanche flow. Recent advances on digital commercial cameras allow acquiring up to 4 - 8 frames per second with high resolution quality. The principal point position, the focal length and the lens distortion are obtained using Brown's and ISPRS's models. The camera calibration parameters enable to triangulate two stereo-pairs, a first one free of snow cover (summer pair) and a second with snow cover (winter pair). A free snow-ice rocky area of the two stereo-pairs has been compared to one scanner laser DEM in order to validate the photogrammetric orientations. Finally, the snow volumes of two avalanche paths on Lautaret avalanche experimental site were calculated. The calculated snow volume released and front avalanche velocities are essential to dynamic avalanche models initial conditions and output validation.
