Prediction of Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) of Municipal Solid Wastes and understanding of their biodegradability by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Prédiction du potentiel de production de bio-méthane (BMP) de déchets ménagers solides et compréhension de leur biodégradabilité au moyen de spectrométrie proche infrarouge

Résumé

Biochemical methane potential (BMP) is one of the most important criteria measured on solid waste before to treat them in anaerobic digester to produce biogas (methane and carbon dioxide). BMP value informs on the capacity of the waste to produce methane in anaerobic conditions as a indicator of its anaerobic biodegradability. However, this measure, consisting of a fermentation of the waste by micro-organism is time consuming (about 30 days). A relationship exists between BMP value and the quality and the quantity of organic matter. NIR spectra present the advantage to supply these two kinds of information. In this study, predictive model based on NIR measurement was built in order to get information about the biodegradability of wastes and to reduce the analysis time from several days to few minutes.
