Abstract : Since two decades, the conceptions guiding the management of rivers have been changing; they especially take better account of riverside wetlands and of social and human benefits... An empirical research carried on two wetlands associated to the Garonne river and to the Gironde estuary (France) highlights the relationships between inhabitants and those environments in the global change context. It underlines, in an a priori paradoxical way, the growing distance towards those riverside wetlands.
