Macroinvertebrate sampling methods in the regulated Lower Rhône, and distribution in habitats
Protocoles d’échantillonnage des macroinvertébrés benthiques dans le Bas-Rhône aménagé, et leur distribution dans les types d’habitat

Biomonitoring has been conducted for more than thirty years on the downstream Rhône River in France, around the Cruas and Tricastin nuclear power plants. Since 2008, biomonitoring has also resumed around the Aramon thermal power plant, and will go on for the next few years. While time series analysis has enabled observation of changes in aquatic invertebrate communities over time, knowledge of their distribution in habitats around the sites remains insufficient. Over the past two years, additional information has been obtained from new samples using different techniques and from different substrates. This additional data should provide (i) feedback on the sampling protocols to be used for macroinvertebrates in a large navigable river, (ii) an assessment of technical and field feasibility, (iii) indications of additional sampling requirements to be incorporated into monitoring. In this way, information is provided about the spatial distribution of macroinvertebrates between microhabitats, particularly for the exotic species that have appeared recently (Hemimysis anomala 2004, Corophium 2005, Jaera istri 2007, Limnomysis benedeni 2009 in Cruas). However, great interannual variability was observed in their abundance. The different techniques proved to be complementary in confirming the presence of indigenous invertebrates.
La surveillance biologique du Bas Rhône au niveau des centrales nucléaires de Cruas et Tricastin se poursuit depuis plus d’une trentaine d’années. La surveillance de la centrale d’Aramon a repris depuis 2008 et se poursuivra les prochaines années. Si les chroniques des suivis ont permis d’observer l’évolution temporelle des communautés d’invertébrés, la connaissance de leur distribution dans les habitats au niveau des sites reste insuffisante. Des compléments d’échantillonnage d’invertébrés selon différentes techniques de prélèvements et différents types de substrats ont été effectués ces deux dernières années. Ces données supplémentaires devraient permettre (i) un retour d’expérience sur les protocoles de prélèvement à utiliser en milieu navigable large, (ii) évaluer la faisabilité technique et de terrain, (iii) orienter les éventuels échantillonnages complémentaires à ajouter aux suivis. Ainsi des informations sur la distribution spatiale des macroinvertébrés benthiques à l’échelle des microhabitats sont apportées, notamment pour des espèces exotiques apparues ces dernières années (Hemimysis anomala 2004, Corophium 2005, Jaera istri 2007, Limnomysis benedeni 2009 à Cruas). Toutefois une grande variabilité interannuelle des abondances est observée. Les différentes techniques s’avèrent être complémentaires pour confirmer la présence des invertébrés autochtones.
