Vers une évaluation de la durabilité des géomembranes en polyéthylène haute densité (PEHD) dans les installations de stockage de déchets non dangereux (ISDND)

Abstract : Using geomembranes (GMB) as an active sealing barrier in non-hazardous waste storage installations is considered essential today. Protecting the environment, and the well-being of nearby residents, in the short and long terms (NHWSI’s are designed to stay in place for several centuries), now means that it is essential to maintain the tightness of the NHWSI’s, monitor the efficiency of the sealing barriers (active and passive) and prevent any risk of contamination. Because GMB’s buried at the bottom of cells are inaccessible, the only possible means of evaluating the functional limits of the GMB’s is to predict their service life. Despite many studies carried out up to now, the issue of determining the durability of GMB’s in non-hazardous waste storage installations is not entirely resolved. Utilization conditions expose GMB’s to very particular demands. They are often made of HDPE and are in contact with lixiviates, liquids produced under the combined effect of water and the natural fermentation of the stored waste, with complex chemical and biological compositions. In parallel to the possibility of biodegradation, even though GMB’s are protected from the UV radiation of the sun, and therefore from photo-oxidation reactions, and are more often than not in an anaerobic environment, they are nevertheless subject to aging, due to the combined effect of temperature and oxygen (thermo-oxidation). PEHD’s can actually oxidize, even in confined media deprived of oxygen. This article synthesizes the latest results in terms of predicting the life duration of high density polyethylene geomembrane’s used at the bottom and on the sides of non-hazardous waste storage installations, based on the latest study, the DURAGEOS project (2009-2013), with funding by the C2D2 incentive program of the MEDDE DRI department, under the aegis of the ADVANCITY and AXELERA competitiveness poles.
