Elevage de traits comtois en système laitier de zone AOP et plus généralement stratégies d’équilibre entre équins et autres productions agricoles dans des exploitations professionnelles

Abstract : Horse rearing, especially for small size herds, is often associated, in France, with other farming activities such as beef or dairy herds in grass territories where horses prevail. To analyze the impact of horse herds in the functioning of the farming systems, we surveyed a hundred farms in four major areas of horse breeding, differing in the agro-climatic and orientation of equine and bovine productions. Results show that in Franche-Comté, a mountainous area of eastern France, Comtois horses associate very well with dairy production. This territory is highly constrained by Protected Designation of Origin specifications and introducing horses improves the management of fields grazed by dairy cows. Similarly, in the Massif Central area, draught horses make use of areas that are unsuitable for dairy or beef herds. In Normandy and Central France, farmers raise dairy or beef herds, whose numbers are often more important than saddle horses but for which they spend less time overall. Because horse rearing has a low profitability (for draught horses) or an unpredictable one (for saddle horses), farmers tend to associate this rearing with more profitable productions that fit with the available surfaces and work force.
