Ecology and growth of the Atlas Cedar in Provence (France)

Résumé
For the past twenty years, the Atlas Cedar has been one of the species most widely used for reafforestation in the Mediterranean region. However, the results obtained are fairly irregular, all the more so since the Cedar is planted in increasingly varying conditions. Consequently, it soon became evident that a greater knowledge of its ecological needs and of the factors limiting its growth was necessary. An ecological study was thus undertaken, based on numerous existing cedar stands. The results of this study are presented in two forms: - a qualitative description of the cedar's ecological behaviour in the zone under study. - an ecological key (guide) determining the fertility of the sites according to the environmental conditions met with. This ecological key is to enable the forester to judge, by a rapid diagnosis, whether the cedar is suited to the site and will have a good rate of growth. The main criteria to which it has been possible to link the growth of the cedar in the region studied, are the climate (total rainfall, temperature, altitude) the nature of the rock, the volume and heterogeneity of the substratum in which the roots may spread (soil and subsoil) and finally the topography.
Une étude écologique a été menée à partir des nombreux boisements de cèdre de France méditerranéenne. Les résultats de cette étude se présentent sous deux formes : - une description qualitative du comportement du cèdre sur la zone étudiée, - une clé écologique désignant la fertilité des sites en fonction des conditions de milieu rencontées. Cette clé écologique doit permettre au forestier, par un diagnostic rapide, d'apprécier si le cèdre est adapté au site et aura un bon taux de croissance. Les principaux critères auxquels a pu être reliée la croissance du cèdre dans la région étudiée sont le climat (pluie totale, température, altitude), la nature de la roche, le volume et l'hétérogénéité du substrat prospectable par les racines (sol et formations superficielles) et enfin la topographie.
