Using the case of the European otter, this methodological article proposes a socio-historical analysis of the construction of naturalist knowledge as opposed to traditional knowledge and to contemporary lay observations, likewise disqualified by the recognized field of knowledge on otters. It sheds light on the relations between producing an inventory and its external environment. The calibration and standardization of the inventory data make it possible to gain a full grasp of all the otter's possible behaviours. Are not the characteristics usually attributed to the animal (rare, discreet, etc.) also the result of another history, that of its constant adaptation to ecological and human conditions?
En prenant appui sur la loutre d'Europe, cet article propose une analyse sociohistorique de la construction des savoirs naturalistes face aux savoirs anciens et aux observations profanes contemporaines, pareillement disqualifiés par le champ de connaissance reconnu sur la loutre. Il s'agit de comprendre ce qui se joue entre la fabrique de l'inventaire et son « extérieur ». La démarche méthodologique adoptée permet de connaître le comportement de la loutre et son mode de vie sans passer par le calibrage et la normalisation des données que suppose la pratique d'inventaire. Les qualificatifs habituellement attribués à l'animal (« rare », « discret », etc.) ne sont-ils pas le résultat d'une autre histoire : celle de son adaptation incessante aux conditions écologiques et humaines ?
