Effect of genetic background on recombination in maize
In maize, the recombination frequency between the pair of linked markers, fl 2-su 1, on chromosome 4 and the normal alleles pair was studied either with limited heterozygosity in this region, against a background of homozygosity in inbred lines or against a background of generalized heterozygosity in hybrids. The weak but significant increase of 1,8 p. 100 in the hybrid is attributed to closeness to the centromere. The hypothesis is postulated of a stronger effect in the distal regions of the chromosomes. The results are discussed in relation to other data and to the consequences for breeding.
