Abstract : Genetic improvement of feed efficiency using two alternate traits compared to feed to gain ratio (FCR) were studied in the growing rabbit: Residual Feed Intake (RFI, ConsoResidual line), and Average Daily Gain under restricted feeding (80% of ad libitum) (ADG, ADGrestrict line). To further examine responses to selection, in generation 9 a comparison of carcass and meat quality traits of the two selected lines with the G0 control population (using frozen embryos) under ad libitum and restricted feeding was applied to 30 individuals per line and feeding level combination. The ADGrestrict line exhibited higher foreleg proportions and smaller hindleg proportion than the ConsoResidual line. For the perirenal and scapular fat, ConsoResidual rabbits showed the lowest values compared to the 2 other lines of rabbits (0.68 ± 0.03%, P < 0.001 and 0.22 ± 0.01%, P < 0.001 respectively). The ADGrestrict line exhibited lower perirenal fat than G0 line (0.82 ± 0.04% and 1.01 ± 0.03% respectively, P < 0.001) but similar scapular fat yield (0.27%, P > 0.05). The meat of ConsoResidual rabbits always exhibited higher water losses compared to the one of the 2 other lines (+ 9.5% for drip loss between D1 and D6 and +5.6% for cooking loss, P < 0.002). It also has a lower ultimate pH (pHu) value (5.47 ± 0.01 for ConsoResidual and 5.53 ± 0.01 for G0 and ADGrestrict, P < 0.001). The ConsoResidual line had always a lighter (higher L* values; +2.2pt at D6) and a yellower (b* value; +0.8% at D6) meat than the ADGrestrict line.
