Digital Dermatitis (DD) is a multifactorial contagious foot disease of cattle, associated with management practices, environmental and microbial factors. While not described before 1973, it is now worldwide one of the most common causes of lameness in cows. It is an increasing concern for farmers. Besides adverse effects of the disease on animal welfare and production, control schemes seem to be ineffective for its eradication, and sometimes even for decreasing its prevalence. Moreover, two of the most effective compounds used in footbath for herd treatment (formaldehyde and copper sulphate) could be forbidden in Europe because of human health or environmental hazards. This presentation aims at providing an overview on the current state of knowledge on this disease and to stress on questions and perspectives for its future control
