Genetic parameters for litter traits including farrowing duration and piglet survival up to weaning in the French Large White and Landrace sows

Résumé

Genetic parameters were estimated for number of piglets born in total (NBT), born alive (NBA), and stillborn (NSB) per litter as well as birth to weaning survival rate (SR), farrowing duration (FD), litter weight and within-litter standard deviation of piglet body weight at birth (SDBW). Since 2002, data were collected on 29,153 French Large White (LW) and 16,354 French Landrace (LR) litters, in 29 LW and 17 LR nucleus herds. The FD was assessed according to four classes: = 4 hours. The traits were analyzed using the REML methodology in a multi-trait animal model including the fixed effects of herd, year x month and parity, and the random effects of the sire of the litter as well as the additive genetic value and permanent environment of the sow. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.10 to 0.13 for litter size, from 0.06 to 0.11 for mortality traits and were around 0.08 for FD. In LW and LR sows, NSB was unfavorably correlated with NBT (rg=0.46±0.06 and 0.56±0.05), but lowly correlated with NBA (rg=0.05±0.08 and 0.18±0.07). Both NBT and NBA showed a genetic antagonism with SR (-0.24±0.09 and -0.32±0.07). The FD was genetically associated with NBT (0.23±0.09 and 0.33±0.05) but not with NBA. The NSB was positively correlated with FD (rg=0.64±0.08 and 0.41±0.09). Litter weight at birth showed low (LR) to moderate (LW) genetic correlations with SR. Higher SDBW was associated with lower SR (rg= -0.21±0.18 and -0.28±0.33). These results indicate that peripartum survival could be improved by selecting for NBA instead of NBT, with possible use of FD which is recorded routinely by French breeders. Selecting against SDBW could also improve piglet survival during lactation. Other innovative traits based on the scoring of sow maternal ability, farrowing ease and ability to switch to a catabolic state at farrowing were registered on these sows and will also be analyzed.
